Cloves come from the flower buds of a tree that is native to the Maluku Islands (or Moluccas) in Indonesia, and are commonly used as a spice. Cloves are commercially harvested primarily in Bangladesh, Indonesia, India, Madagascar, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania (Zanzibar).

Cloves are used in Asian, African, and Middle Eastern cuisines for aromatic qualities. In Mexican cuisine, cloves often accompany cumin and cinnamon. They are also used in Peruvian cuisine, in a wide variety of dishes.
