Big Idea: Several strategies, done together, can reduce exposure to lead dust.

Talking points:

  • Cleaning – Wet clean floors and windowsills frequently to minimize lead dust. Consider leaving shoes at the door to cut down on lead dust being tracked in to the house.
  • Lead stick – Let your health care provider know that you are renovating a pre-1978 house. Children and pregnant mom should be tested for lead throughout the duration of the renovation.
  • Hands – Wash hands frequently with soap and water – not hand sanitizer. Hand sanitizer kills germs but it won’t remove lead dust.
  • Avoid – peeling lead paint
