Lead: Common Sources

Big idea: Lead can be found in items commonly found in and around the home

Toys and Toy Jewelry – Toy recalls are through the Consumer Product Safety Commission; they likely do not catch everything

Lead paint

  • Houses built before 1978
  • Windows, doors, stairs, porches, railings
  • paint outside a home can chip and flake into the soil

Bullets and fishing weights – Homemade bullets and fishing weights contain lead


  • General recommendation is plastic or vinyl mini-blinds manufactured prior to 1997
  • Sunlight and heat can break down the blinds and release lead dust
