The January 13, 2017 rule, amends HUD’s Lead Safe Housing Rule covering HUD-assisted pre-1978 homes. The stricter definition of “elevated blood lead level” in young children matches CDC’s approach. HUD’s new action level for lead in the blood of a child under age 6 in assisted housing is lowered from 20 micrograms of lead per deciliter to 5, and other assisted units in a property where children under age 6 reside will have risk assessments done. This important change will allow for a faster response when a young child (specifically, under six years old) is exposed to lead-based paint hazards in their HUD-assisted homes.
